I think this whole thing with Gov. Christie taking advantage of his position as Governor to enjoy a state beach has been blown way out of proportion. If you look at the incident rationally, by doing this, he saved the government a bunch of money. Had the beach been open this is likely what would have happened:
- Hundreds of people would have shown up on that stretch of beach, to rescue him by pushing him back into the sea.
- It is likely that the Coast Guard would have responded and tied up a Coast Guard Cutter on a non-existent rescue mission.
- Beach Lifeguards would have been overwhelmed; their resources stretched thin leaving other areas of the beach uncovered.
- An additional State Police response to control the crowds.
However, none of this happened because the beach was closed.
