Fake and Fake

From the movie “Speed”

There is plenty of fake news out there. But not all sleigh of hand moves are inherently dishonest. It is one thing to falsely claim kinship where none exists. Witness Elizabeth Warren’s claim of American Indian heritage to become Princess Angry Beaver. It is entirely another to build an action sequence in a movie, that defies physics.

I look at the overall context of the representation. I give movies a certain amount of leeway. “The Getaway” (the first),”Small Town in Texas” and “Piranha” (the first) were all filmed in and around San Marcos, Texas. I am familiar with the area and in some cases with the actual filming. Let’s just say that that the road trips portrayed in the films: you can’t get there from here. A seamless chase sequence that lasted two minutes on film, was actually cobbled together from locations that were twenty of thirty miles apart, didn’t intersect, or didn’t exist.

Movies aren’t real. They require the viewer to suspend disbelief in order to make the movie work. Here is a scene from one of the most famous movies ever made.

“Casablanca,” Bogart and Bergman saying goodbye

The rest of the story. It was 1943, airplanes were in short supply and thus expensive. The studio built a 3/4 size airplane replica. There were no CGI effects back then. The studio hired midgets to serve as ground crew and passengers. Their job was to mill around in the background.

People go to movies with the expectation that they will be deceived. It is part of the magic. Read the “Jack Reacher” books. In the books Jack Reacher is 6’5″ and 250 lbs. What does Hollywood give us? Tom Cruise, all 5’9″ of him. If he can pull it off, more power to him.

I suspect, that people are having problems differentiating between reality and fantasy. It appears to me that liberals are playing an all or nothing at all game when viewing the actions of their opponents. There is black and white with no shades in between.
