Compare and Contrast

What is art? Is it defined by the person who created it? Or is it viewer differentiate between art and dreck? A charter school official is out of a job because sixth graders were exposed to a photo of Michelangelo’s David. The sculpture (below) is a classic.

Outraged parents claimed the photo and statute are obscene. Yeah, no. The United States Supreme Court set the standard way back in 1973.

Whether “the average person, applying contemporary community standards“, would find that the work, taken as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest,

Whether the work depicts or describes, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct or excretory functions[4] specifically defined by applicable state law,

Whether the work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literaryartisticpolitical, or scientific value.[note 1]

If obscenity isn’t the linchpin for the perpetually offended there is another avenue to consider. Here is the statue of the Venus de Milo. As already mentioned, bare boobs aren’t gonna make it on the offensive meter. I know, I know! No arms. The sculpture offends because it celebrates violence against women.
