The mob is using the wrong knot! A proper hanging requires a drop. The drop ensures that the suspect’s neck is broken or dislocated oftentimes causing instant death. 

When the suspect is hoisted up from the ground and suspended, he suffocates and that can take up to twenty minutes… nevermind. If the populace is going to make a habit of this type of thing, they should erect a proper gallows.
