Seattle law enforcement officers need to update their copies of the Newspeak Dictionary at once. Suspected criminals are now to be referred to as “community members”:

One assumes that the police use a standardized form. If the choice is limited to Reporting Person, Complainant, Witness, Suspected Person, arrested person and other it is not like making a choice is an editorial comment.

That comes later when any of the following terms are entirely appropriate when discussing suspects or arrests: scumbag, asshole, shithead, turd, dumbshit, rocket scientist, booger eating moron, and motherfucker. This is by no means an exhaustive list, and there are regional variations and generational variants. Check with local law enforcement.

My prediction: with the kinder gentler approach assaults on police officers in the Seattle area will rise, and the number of officers involved in shootings will double.
