Legal Ramifications of Designation
1. It is unlawful for a person in the United States or subject to the jurisdiction of the United States to knowingly provide “material support or resources” to a designated FTO. (The term “material support or resources” is defined in 18 U.S.C. § 2339A(b) as “currency or monetary instruments or financial securities, financial services, lodging, training, expert advice or assistance, safehouses, false documentation or identification, communications equipment, facilities, weapons, lethal substances, explosives, personnel, transportation, and other physical assets, except medicine or religious materials.) 2. Representatives and members of a designated FTO, if they are aliens, are inadmissible to and, in certain circumstances, removable from the United States (see 8 U.S.C. §§ 1182 (a)(3)(B)(i)(IV)-(V), 1227 (a)(1)(A)). 3. Any U.S. financial institution that becomes aware that it has possession of or control over funds in which a designated FTO or its agent has an interest must retain possession of or control over the funds and report the funds to the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

I could go on to describe why such a designation is a appropriate and the practical effect it would have on the Mexican Cartels. However, I suspect that the true target of such a designation is closer to home.
The United States Code that authorizes the Department of State to designate a terrorist organization also includes the process to be followed. Included in that process is an appellate procedure and the ability of the Congress to override such a designation.
The MSM would have people believe that the Mexican Cartels are only involved in drug trafficking. This is not true. The cartels control gasoline and petrochemical theft, and political influence peddling. They operate protection rackets and kidnapping gangs. Nothing crosses the border without the connivance of the cartels, including illegal aliens. Designating the Mexican Cartels as a terrorist organization threatens the potential voting base of the democrats.
Because Trump made the designation, the democrats will oppose it. Congress, will challenge the designation. The democrats will be placed in a position of openly supporting a criminal enterprise. Democrats supporting criminal activity isn’t new, getting caught in the act, is.

The democrats will rely on the MSM to suppress images like the ones above. I expect them to point out that if the cartels kill people, they do it the old fashioned way with drive by shootings and targeted executions. Somehow that makes it better.
The cartels may represent the only form of capitalism approved by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
