A man shot and killed his son-in-law who jumped out of the bushes to surprise him for his birthday, in what the local sheriff called a “horrible accident.”

The father-in-law, Richard Dennis, will not face charges, authorities said.

Florida is a state of mind. I’ve never been a fan of surprise parties. As a participant in the ambush I always felt ridiculous jumping out and yelling surprise. As the recipient, I almost never was surprised.

It could be that it was an occupational hazard. With more than a thousand hard entries behind me, knocking down a door and yelling, “POLICE, Search Warrant,” hiding behind a couch just wasn’t the same. At work, we were usually successful in carrying off our surprise party. No body ever thanked us, or baked a cake, or blew out candles.

Well, there was the one time. It involved four year old girls, and three extraordinarily pregnant mothers and a birthday party. We bought pizza and sang Happy Birthday. If you have been paying attention, you already know about that.

We did one search warrant on Halloween. We busted down the door shouting, “Trick or Treat Motherfuckers.” Didn’t get to do that again. The boss wouldn’t let us out of the office on Halloween after that.

One thing is sure, the son-in-law sure was surprised.
