Here’s an exercise for you budding Carl Bernstein’s. Here are three brief descriptions of the exploits of three different serial rapists who have been active for over forty years. All three know one another and move in the same circles. There are indications that two probably shared women at the same time, in the same place. This means in the early days they may try a variety of victims not settling on a particular race, sex, or type until they find what the like. Some will not stop at rape and will continue to murder, not as a means, but as an end in itself. Murder may be an unintended consequence as they learn to control victims, before and after the attack. So how would a wealthy serial rapist with almost unlimited resources and years to perfect his technique go about culling the herd of young nubiles in search for the one?

Two of the examples given are similar in spirit if not execution. In the examples, the victim is isolated and then confronted with a nude or semi-nude attacker. I don’t know if saying no after your attacker has bounced his penis off your chin is a denial or the offering of the perfect target. The victim is overcome before she realized there was a need for resistance.

The recent flood of sexual misconduct accusations against powerful public figures doesn’t seem like it will be coming to an end anytime soon. Even this week, another accusation of rape was made against Harvey Weinstein. Actress Paz de la Huerta alleges that Weinstein raped her two times within the span of a few months. His accusers now exceed 55 women.

Unfortunately, in all but one instance, the lack of an immediate outcry and evidence will give most District Attorney’s cold feet. The chances of a successful prosecution are slight. I pointed out in the beginning that serial rapists embark on a quest to find the perfect turn on. At the same time, they are refining their techniques in acquiring, controlling, and disposing of their victims. Before wealth and power, there were shovels to cover up mistakes.
This current round of outcries should put cold case detectives on notice. A serial rapist went to college in your community in the early to mid-seventies. How many open missing or Jane Doe or rape-murder cases to you have still outstanding? Have these guys been eliminated as suspects? Why not?
