Race rules state that if a big game animal like a moose, caribou or buffalo is killed in defense of life or property, the musher must gut the animal and report it to race officials at the next checkpoint.

Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race rule

Imagine the application of the Iditarod rule in a more urban setting.

The story does not mention if the shooter followed Iditarod rules.

Reminds me of an Aggie joke: Two Aggies are out hunting. One hunter accidently shoots the other. The shooter loads his buddy into his pickup truck and rushes him to the hospital. Minutes later a doctor comes out the treatment room and announces that the victim has died. The doctor points out that had the Aggie not stopped to field dress his friend, they might have been able to save him.

Who knew? Field dressing as a crime prevention technique?
