Why is it that it is perfectly acceptable to treat Gender Identity Disorder, a mental illness, with a knife. However, it is no longer acceptable to perform a lobotomy to reduce the symptoms of mental disorder?  

Maybe it is not the knife. Could it be that surgeons are operating on the wrong end?
