Grimes

The price of candy has shot way up for Jacobia Grimes.

A career shoplifter, Grimes faces a possible 20 years to life in prison after he allegedly stuffed $31 worth of candy bars into his pockets at a Dollar General store on South Claiborne Avenue on a December afternoon.

A manager at the store spotted the 34-year-old swiping the merchandise about 2:30 p.m. Dec. 9, and Grimes unloaded his pockets before his arrest, according to a police report.

The New Orleans Advocate reports that Grimes is facing 20 years to life for stealing $31 worth of candy.  This is an incorrect statement and the paper knew it was incorrect when they printed it. Grimes, because of a history of similar theft convictions is now qualified to be prosecuted under a separate charge as a “Habitual Criminal”. Grimes ran afoul of the “bitch”. Legislators decided sometime ago that after multiple convictions it was unlikely that the offender would conform his behavior to societies requirements. When that point was reached, “Habitual”, “three strikes” etc it was okay to put him back inside and never let him out. Make no mistake Grimes knows all about the “bitch” he just didn’t believe it would happen to him.

Grimes is right to be shocked.  After all in 20 years he got convicted five times. If I had to guess, I would say that Grimes stole something every day that he was out in the community. I hung out with guys like Grimes, while working undercover. They got up in the morning knowing that they were going to commit a crime.  They had no idea what type, where, who the victim would be or what the potential pay off would be. All they needed was the right opportunity. The funny thing is he probably did not steal while he was in prison, that could get a brother killed.
