Another Gun Control Proposal

Democrat Pol Says It Is Not Sporting to Use a Semiautomatic Weapon for Self-Defense

Is there any question that politics do not attract the best and brightest?  Then again we are talking Pennsylvania.  Dan Muroff (D) Pennsylvania could be from the top of the heap in his neighborhood. I never thought of self defense as a sporting activity. If Mr. Muroff is suggesting that there ought to be additional rules to make the activity more sporting I’ll give it a shot. I come up with more questions than answers for instance:

Bag limits, shall we institute bag limits in anticipation of running out of felons or wait until there is a documented shortage?

It’s usually considered poor taste to shoot bird on the ground.  Should we come up with a speed component on felons?  Crawling, not sporting. Dead run, sporting, but remember to lead them a bit more. How about any speed at least as fast as two felons carrying your 72 inch flat screen out the door as the ideal?

One good thing about this sportsmanship stuff, it takes shooting to wound right off the table, every shot a kill shot.  Does that mean the homeowner can dispatch a wounded burglar prior to the arrival of police? It would be the humane thing to do.

Can the homeowner handle the field dressing or should that be left to the medical examiner?

Who gets the body? I am not one for collecting trophies, but some people do.  A full head and shoulders mount would be impressive in any living room.  On the other hand the family may feel cheated by not having the state pay for a full burial. There is ample precedent to allow the taking of ears, scalps and scrotum.  Scrotum collecting should not be encouraged as the scrotum is often turned into a tobacco pouch. Smoking is not to be countenanced, in this day and age. I am sure reasonable people can work something out.

The final point of contention, that I see, is defining acceptable hunting grounds.  In Texas, there is a rather vague law that makes it illegal to hunt game birds over a baited field. Does an ATM, bank, 7-11, traffic light, victim’s residence or any other business constitute a baited field?

I think we all owe Dan Muroff a debt of gratitude for uttering one the stupidest comments this week.  It is a crowded field; many run, few are chosen but this week you rose above all other politicians for the stupidest statement of the week.
