It is fundamentally dishonest to apply contemporary sensitivities to the actions and attitudes displayed by individuals long gone. Don’t get me wrong, some actions are evil no matter what the era. The actions and attitudes of Hitler, Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot are wrong without regard to time and place.
Smith and Paul Robeson were contemporaries. They both sang the same song, “That’s Why Darkies Were Born.” Kate Smith, a white woman, is condemned as a racist. Paul Robeson, a black, communist, is a hero. Same act different result.
NEW YORK (AP) — The Yankees have suspended the use of Kate Smith’s recording of “God Bless America” during the seventh-inning stretch while they investigate an allegation of racism against the singer.
The New York Daily News reported Thursday there are conflicting claims about Smith’s 1939 song “That’s Why Darkies Were Born.” The song originated in the 1931 Broadway revue “George White’s Scandals,” and was considered satire. It was recorded by Smith and also by Paul Robeson, who was black.
The first thing to know is that liberals have no sense of humor. The song, composed in the 1930’s was considered to be satire.

I sure am glad that SNOPES cleared that up. For a moment it appeared that the Babylon Bee had stopped being a satire site.
