I Need an Intervention

Best I can tell Bob Ross has been dead for over 20 years. For those that don’t know him, he was the host of a TV series on PBS. During the half hour show he started with a blank canvas. At the end of the show he displayed a completed landscape. In between was his running commentary regarding “how to.” His delivery was soothing and low key. My understanding is that the time his show was popular with the pot smoking crowd. They weren’t interested in painting but goofed on his narrative. PBS has started rerunning the original series.

The Joy of Painting is an American half-hour instructional television show created and hosted by painter Bob Ross which ran from January 11, 1983, to May 17, 1994.

The only reason I am aware of Bob Ross is because his show preceded “This Old House” in the PBS schedule. This meant that occasionally I caught a few minutes of the show. At the time PBS was one of six channels available, NBC, CBS, ABC, PBS, WGN and whatever that station was out of Secaucus, New Jersey. Cable wasn’t offered out in the hinterlands of Bryan, Texas.

Nowadays I have cable. I have access to a 100 cable channels. I am set up with Amazon Prime and through that services many hundreds more channels. But there is nothing on. TV has changed. Used to be advertising time on TV was expensive. Now with so many channels anybody with fifty cents can run an ad. Used to be that four to six minutes of every half hour was devoted to advertising. Now it is reversed. The programing runs six to eight minutes the rest of the time is devoted to ads. Not to worry, that is why channel surfing was invented. The TV stations countered. Got an ad on one station? Guess what? Ads are running on all other stations at the same time. Flipping channels just brings you to the same ad, different channel.

To counter the counter measures, the bailout is PBS. Being a communist run entity, there are no ads. Full circle, PBS has dug up Bob Ross. There he is painting and muttering. Adult Depends, or Bob Ross, Medicare Advantage, or Bob Ross, Medication that will kill you in a different way than the condition it purports to treat, or Bob Ross.

You know Bob Ross isn’t half bad.

I’d quote Springsteen about a hundred channels, but I’m done with that whiney little bitch.
