Changing the name is a great misdirection play. Anti-gun people react to the name and otherwise are unable to identify an assault rifle. Noted gun ban advocate Shelia Jackson-Lee describes an AR-15:

Opinion seems to be evenly divided. Some on the left are saying this is a false flag done by an Islamophobe. Others on the left are saying, no that is a correct statement.
