Journalism, Then and Now

I am probably dating myself. I still recall how Walter Cronkite ended his news broadcasts. This was back when the news was intended to report events, rather than sell tampons and toilet paper. Walter wasn’t anything to brag about. But there were some things he wouldn’t do.

It was somehow reassuring to hear Edward R Murrow conclude his broadcast with his familiar sign off.

Paul Harvey was on radio. Everybody who ever heard him can recall the way he signed off. Other people might have said “Good Day” but nobody said it the way he did.

Those days are long gone. Who could imagine putting Walter Cronkite and journalistic integrity in the same sentence. These days, if it wasn’t for low standards journalists wouldn’t have any standards at all. CNN has brought Jeffrey Toobin back. Why not? Masturbating during an editorial conference doesn’t indicate a lack of judgment. He put the “show” in showmanship.

Would I jerk you off?

I guess as a sign off it is memorable. It just isn’t the same as in the old days.

At least we’ll always have Jimmy Breslin.
