I had a police K-9 for two years.  Frankly I am not sympathetic.  The Supreme Court ruled long ago the a peace officer’s peace cannot be disturbed.  The dog can put up with that bullshit with the rest of us. 

Assault him, and I’d give him the same opportunity to defend himself as any officer.
