Technology Marches On

Some things never change

I started to go off on this story (at the link), but then I realized the only thing that changed was the technology. As long as there have been cops there have been idiots calling for shit that is not a police concern. I used to call them “dog pissing on a rose bush calls.”

Try calling a mental health professional to tell them about the little green men two minutes after five o’clock or on the weekend. Chances are your call will go unanswered or head straight to voice mail. Call 9-11 and the cops will come. Cops will respond to anything. It doesn’t matter if the complaint has anything to do with public safety.

Over thirty years as a cop I have responded to:

  • A request to spank a sixteen year old. Mama didn’t feel up to the task.
  • To turn off the water because a pipe was leaking.
  • To turn on the water while the occupant was out of town. Didn’t want the lawn to die.
  • To tell the Electric utility guys, working outside a residence, to be quiet and hurry up and restore power.
  • To enter a restaurant every morning at 4 am to turn on the coffee urn so the coffee would be hot and fresh, no waiting for the 6 am opening.
  • Pick up the newspapers in the driveway and feed the outside cats, while the owner was out of town.
  • Take a report because some clown lost an item at an unknown time and place.

You get the idea. Now there is an App for that. There needs to be an automated response App: IT SUCKS TO BE YOU.
