Another Day in the Neighborhood

LAPD officers responded to an aggressive dog call. When the pit bull charged the officers, they shot it. The green fore stock on the shot gun is a visual clue that it is loaded with less than lethal rounds. The bean bag round did what is was supposed to do. Once hit, the dog decided there was something in the backyard that needed his attention. The fact that the officers showed up with the bean bag shotgun demonstrates that they had the well being of the dog in mind. I don’t know why this is news worthy.

The homeowner is unhappy. He had an obligation to keep his dog restrained. Something he failed to do. The dog paid for his neglect. As a cop for thirty years I take issue with his statement.

“I feel like they were here to shoot the dog, that was it,” Lennon told KCBS-TV. “I couldn’t even wrap my head around it. It was unbelievable. They start at the end of my driveway with guns drawn.”

“I feel like the officers should be held accountable for what they did. There was no remorse about what happened,” the homeowner added. “They said that I was very lucky that they didn’t use a live round on her face and she should be dead in my driveway.”

Corey Lennon, dog owner

Mr. Lennon is full of shit. All the cops I know, myself included, that have shot a dog and a suspect (not in the same incident) always felt bad about shooting the dog. The suspect, not so much.

I have participated in over a 1000 search warrants. We expected dogs to be protective of their territory. We had a plan in place to deal with dogs. Sometimes it was as simple as allowing a resident more freedom of movement, as long as it was directed at containing the animal. Other times one of the entry team would carry a CO2 fire extinguisher. The roar and the discharge of the fire extinguisher into a the face of a charging dog caused the animal to retreat.

We were clearing a house one night. Our point man entered the master bed room. It was dark. We heard him yell. We found him perched on a dresser. A 130 pound pot bellied pig “treed” him. The pig wasn’t aggressive. He just wanted to play with his new found friend. We had great fun playing with the pig.

It’s just the same old thing. The dog was just being a dog. The owner is a shithead. The dog paid the price.
