Headlines

I’m never sure if the folks that write the headlines bother to read the stories that follow. Here is an example:

volunteer

verb

uk  /ˌvɒl.ənˈtɪər/ us  /ˌvɑː.lənˈtɪr/

C1 [ I or T ]

to offer to do something that you do not have to do, often without having been asked to do it and/or without expecting payment:

Cambridge Dictionary

It seems to me that more lives could have been saved if officials had made evacuation mandatory rather than relying on their target audience to make the proper decision. Then again, maybe the people who write headlines aren’t very bright.

Oh for the headline writers of yesteryear!
