It is easy to resort to name calling. I don’t like SAPD Chief McManus. I think he is the worst kind of scumbag. And he runs a major police department. I base that opinion on observed easily obtained facts. The death of fifty plus illegals in a trailer on the south side, just reinforces my opinion. Let’s set the wayback machine and compare and contrast two similar events.
In 2017 SAPD came across a trailer load of wetbacks. They were all ambulatory and running like hell. Patrol rounded up some. Just as patrol officers were about to call Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Chief McManus arrived on the scene. Being a good liberal, confronted with downtrodden migrants, McManus decreed that the city had no need for ICE. Instead, he called Catholic Charities. At the link.
SAPD body-camera footage released to the Defenders shows McManus at the 2017 scene, dressed in civilian clothing, telling someone on the phone, “So, we are, we are not involving ICE in this investigation.”

This was not a mass casualty event. But only because no bystanders or officers placed themselves in the path of McManus as he rushed to get before the cameras.
The decision by McManus to handle the 2017 case at the state level led AG Ken Paxton to file two lawsuits against McManus. The first accused the chief and other city leaders of limiting the enforcement of federal immigration laws, while the second attempted to have McManus removed from his position.
San Antonio City Council this spring voted to approve a $300,000 settlement with the AG’s office. The city, without having to admit fault, agreed to clarify its written policies on cooperating with immigration authorities in exchange for the AG’s office dropping the first suit and its appeal of the suit that attempted to have McManus removed.Fast forward to June 2022, the first numbers were 40 dead potential democrats. The number has climbed to 50 plus.

Fair enough, investigating the smuggling of illegal aliens is a job for ICE. However, fifty murders on SAPD turf ought to evoke more of a response from McManus than, ‘we’re there for you.’ Question: “If the local police decline to investigate 50 murders, did they really happen?”
There you have it, in one instance, according to McManus ICE was not wanted or needed. In the second, you’ll find McManus hiding in the second rank at the press conference. Cops have a term for such an event. It is a “shit sandwich.” Even somebody as jaded as McManus knows preening for the press while stepping over 50 dead bodies is a non-starter. Upright illegals photo op, dead illegals, talk to the other guy. McManus is happy to yield to ICE because dead bodies don’t profit him. SAPD stands ready to assist. Unidentified dead cannot register as democrats and vote.
Did you hear about the time that Chief McManus ordered an ambulance about to transport an injured officer to the hospital, to remain at the scene until he arrived? Photo op don’t you know?
In thirty years, a cop, I worked for some good chiefs. I also worked for some real turds. The only reason McManus didn’t hit the top of my turd list is that I didn’t have to work for him.
